WWT: Back-to-School; Back-With-Prayer Week 1

The ads are out; the shopping in full force.  As our state promotes our tax-free back to school buying, I’m jolted back to the reality of the pressure our children face as they go back to school. For some, it will be back to familiar surroundings and faces. Others face a whole new campus with new opportunities…and new temptations.

Over the next four weeks, I’ll share with you the prayers I am praying for my kids as the summer draws to an end. Inspired by Kathi Lipp’s new book, “Praying God’s Word for Your Life”, I have taken Ephesians 1 and chosen four passages to pray for my three kids. Won’t you print it out and pray along for your children with me?

Week 1:

You are Chosen

Father, I pray that my child/children will know deep in their hearts that they are chosen.

Ephesians 1:4, 11

“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love” v. 11 ” In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,” (NIV)

My children are chosen by You; the Creator of the Universe and the Father of perfect, unconditional love. May this truth completely fill their love gap, giving them the acceptance their hearts’ crave. May this truth build in them a confidence that will be magnetic; drawing others so they are light to those hurting all around them.

Thank you for choosing us, Jesus. Today, may our thoughts, hearts and actions ooze out the truth that You, Almighty God, have picked us.

Amen

We’ve got just two weeks until we drop off our middle girl at college; so much change in the Cowell house! While I am praying for the changes we are experiencing, how can I pray for you and your family?

  1. Please pray for my Anna. She is now on medicine for anxiety, but it’s still a struggle for her. We are going to a Christian counselor and psychiatrist. Her older sister is a senior and deserves a good year. Life is not easy…doing this parenting solo…not by choice (he left and is an alcoholic). Actually, we all 3 could use prayer. I am teaching a different grade level this year and am feeling a little anxious myself. My oldest is more spiritually grounded right now than I am, but school can be difficult when you get excluded because you are known to be a “good girl”. Thank you for writing this blog…and for the prayers:)

    1. Jody- I’m praying.
I, too have struggled with anxiety as a young woman, so I know how she feels.

Thank you, Chelsea, for rallying with your support!

Jody, I could take the description of your prayer and copy and paste it into my own for my girls last year. We also choose the route of a Christian counselor and it made a huge difference. Change is slow, but heading in the right direction!

Jesus, thank you that you are the missing parent in Jody’s home. I ask that she would physically and emotionally feel you come up underneath her and lifting her up. We know you are wild about Anna and desire her heart to be whole. Help her to see the areas where she can help herself get there and surround her with those who will have the patience and unconditional love to help her get there as well! Give her older sister supernatural patience. Thank you for the gift of teaching you have empowered Jody with. Give her confidence as she expands her realm of knowledge. We praise you for all the good you will do and bring into their lives this year! You are good! Amen

      1. Thank you so much Lynn, Chelsea, and Ashley. Your responses have moved me to tears…tears of joy and comfort. I know that I am not alone in this. God is so faithful!

    3. Praying for all of us as we deal with the realities of this world, and particularly Jodi. Lord please keep our minds in perfect peace as we set them on you. Help us to know without question that you have overcome the world. And please Lord, help us and particularly Jodi and her daughter Anna not to be anxious about anything but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, to present our requests to you God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus. Amen!

  2. Hang in there Jody. God is right there, no matter what you’re going through. He promised He’d never leave you or forsake you! So, hold to Jesus!

  3. The schools my teach without an agenda that goes over curriculum like making them read bad books love stories about bad relationships and then sending them to talk about the book.

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

Jesus, please protect our children in the environments they are in. Open our eyes as parents to be truly engaged with the material that is influencing our kids and empower us to pour in your truth every day…Your Word! Amen

  4. I am sorry to say about this anxiety that I am reading in the comments! But I am healed with all my infirmaties that what God had told me when He led me in this scripture in Isaiah 53:5 “For he was wounded for my transgression, He was bruised for my iniquity, the chastisement of my peace is upon Him and with His stripes I am healed! I have been claiming that promises!

    1. Lynn Cowell says:

Marilyn, I have to often remind myself of scripture when it says that the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy. That applies to us…and our kids! Anxiety is one of his heavy tools as he gets God’s children wrapped around all their troubles and get their trust off their amazing God. We can win..the second part of that verse tells us that Jesus comes to give us ABUNDANT LIFE. For us and our families!

John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

      Thank you JESUS!!!

  5. Thanks Lynn for a great post…and the reminder to pray for our kids as they begin another school year. Yes, our home will be very different too as we bid goodbye to my youngest daughter. Parting is truly such sweet sorrow. So happy for her…just can’t believe this chapter is closing. Blessings and so great to see you at She Speaks!!
