Modeling Monday with Anne

Today’s post is written by a precious girl I mentor, Anne Patterson. I thought you would enjoy hearing some wisdom us for and our daughters from this sweet 16 year old:

Vic Pic

Like me, your daughter may not be married yet but that doesn’t mean the wisdom in Proverbs 31 is not for us! Proverbs gives us a great idea of the kind of women God wants us to be. Your daughter may not be considered a woman yet but all women are daughters of Christ no matter what our age!

The book of Proverbs is a great place to focus to know the kind of ladies would best please the Lord. Proverbs 31: 21 says: “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come”. It is good to be a emotionally strong and dignified girl but I am going to pin point what your daughter and you can wear during the winter time to show that you are strong and have dignity, just like the Lord wants us to be.

A huge trend during the colder months are leggings, we all love them and yes- they are so comfy but they are extremely tight and sometimes even see-through! Leggings are not considered pants and should not be worn like them; leggings are intended to be worn with longer shirts, sweaters, and dresses! At my house the rule is simple: if my shirt covers all of my rear and my entire front then I can wear leggings. This picture would be a no go!

Leggings expose a lot because of how tight and sometimes thin they are so we don’t want to walk around showing the world everything. We must protect our bodies and protect the minds of our brothers in Christ who are trying to stay pure! Show dignity with the clothes we wear, by covering ourselves in areas that no one else should see.

Another thing we should watch out for is when we wear a dress or skirt with a pair of tights. Even though you are wearing tights, the length of a dress or skirt isn’t irrelevant. A good rule to follow is the finger tip length or if you have long arms like me then the knuckle length works great as well! A cute dress that is a bit shorter can always be worn with a thick pair of leggings so just in case the wind kicks up or your dress comes up a bit nothing would be see that shouldn’t!

Lastly, let’s talk  shirts. A trend I have seen this year is the see-through chiffon or polyester shirts. Some girls must have thought their shirt is opaque but it definitely was not. Make sure you and your daughter wear a light colored shirt or a tank underneath this style. Even if its black, that doesn’t mean you can’t see through. Also, if your bra is a nude color, a tank should be worn underneath! Plus she wouldn’t be freezing!

By watching what you and your girl wear, you can model and help her portray the kind of lady that God wants her to be, a girl with dignity and one who is strong!

Merry Christmas!

  1. Great post! Just as much as our girls need reminded of these things, so do we moms! Thank you for sharing this Anne!

  2. Thank you for this post. I forwarded it to my 12 yr old ( almost 13) daughter’s school email. Don’t worry about the email address everything is sent back to me and it is run by the school. She can only receive certain emails. :)

My daughters and I have been discussing this trend for some time now and it is nice to get perspective from another young lady.

It is nice to be able to send her these posts. Thank you for ministering to all of us!

    God Bless!!

Thanks Laura! Doesn’t it help to have these issues come from someone other than us? I hope to have Anne back often :)

    • Anne Patterson says:

thank you so much Laura! Even though it’s sometimes hard to not follow all the latest trends, honoring the Lord and respecting his wishes of dignity and modesty is much better, to me at least :)

  3. Grammar Mom says:

Did you mean definitely or defiantly? :-)

I also make sure my daughter has a tunic-like top over her leggings. We saw a lovely young woman wearing leggings as pants at a clothing store, and they were so tight, the split of her buttocks was as evident as if she were nude. I wanted to say something but did not know how to without making her self-conscious, and I did not want to say it to her supervisor because it could be taken as a complaint. I honestly don’t think she realized it.

    • Lynn Cowell says:

Thanks for catching that mistake, friend!

Yes…I have seen that too many times myself! In fact, on the work out video I do with my husband, there is a lady like that on there! It is awful!

    • Lynn Cowell says:

My son, who is 22, shared with me how he doesn’t understand why girls think these are attractive. As he put it, “We just don’t want to see that!”

  4. Holly Orman says:

Oh what a great topic! This trend makes me cringe. While I understand that young girls want to keep up with fashion trends, where are their mothers and WHY are they not stopping them from exposing their bodies like this. Not only moms, but DADS…HELLO, how can you reasonable let your daughter walk around flaunting her every curve with a pair of these on. I have boys(and girls), but as a mother of 3 boys, it saddens me to see what they are heavily exposed to in the latest female fashion trends. How can you expect them to restrain themselves from looking?!? Girls, Moms, Dads, PLEASE stand up for modesty and take a pass on this popular clothing item, or at least wear it like the article says…covered up.

    • Anne Patterson says:

I couldn’t agree more! We have to not only respect ourselves but our other brothers in Christ! By covering ourselves and not showing anything off we shouldn’t and not giving them anything to look at, is a kind and dignified thing to do! :) thank you for sharing and i’m glad you enjoyed the article!
